Let Down Your Hair: Rapunzel Hairdo Hat

Today I thought I'd share something I completed a while back for a special customer: Rapunzel Hairdo Hats.  At Christmastime, a friend of mine asked if I could make some custom hairdo hats for her three little girls. They loved the movie Tangled & pretending to be Rapunzel, so I made them these hats for their favorite fairy tale playtime.

I originally designed an enchanted princess hairdo hat for my daughter, which you may remember from Halloween:

I modified my original design for a full-on Rapunzel feel.  My friend wanted something that would be long, but not drag on the floor. So I created hats with long, lovely fleece braids (ankle-length based on each girl's height), accented with silk flowers,

And satin bows to tie up the ends:

I made each one in a different shade of pink so they could tell their custom length hair apart, but they'd still be similar enough that there would be no chance of squabbling over who has what color (as one of 3 girls myself, I know all about that!)

Does it sound a little crazy to say even though I'm a grown woman I secretly want to wear one too?

These were a big hit with the three little princesses, so knowing they love wearing them is probably as good as being able to wear one myself!

An Enchanted Fairy Tale Princess Costume

This week has been a race to get all our costumes ready for the Halloween weekend, but I'm finally nearing the finish line and just couldn't wait to show this one I made for my little lady: A Pretty Princess.  I'm so glad she seems to love it as much as I do:)

I had already made the fleece Princess Hairdo Hat a while back, so I designed a fleecy fairy tale dress to go with it.  Something that would look soft and dreamy, but still be very warm for the chilly evening air.  I made the bodice light pink and added details with ric rac & Bavarian style ribbon, then trimmed the collar with some ivory lace.

I also decorated the front with coordinating satin florets and then hand sewed a sprinkling of them all over the skirt:

I made godets on the sleeves that echoed the style of the front and accented them with some medieval-style silver buttons:

I also trimmed the hem of the gown with more lace and made puffed shoulders on the sleeves like all good princesses wear them:

I envisioned designing something with a kind of Mary Blair feel.  Sweet and enchanting, like she's just stepped out of the It's A Small World ride or Sleeping Beauty (minus the slightly sourpuss face here):

With her flowing blond "hair" and her dainty manners, she's in all her regal glory.

Not bad for being designed and thrown together in less than 3 days!  On Halloween I'll be revealing the other costumes that have been in the works and show my little trio of trick-or-treaters together.

Come to the Cute Side With A Costume Pattern Giveaway!

Do you know the power of the Cute Side?  It's little kids+whimsical costumes.  They always get smiles wherever they go.  Especially at Halloween.  A little over a year ago my whimsical hat making skills kicked off with my Space Princess Hairdo Hat.

There was such amazing response to this little hat I still can't quite believe it!  Of course I got several suggestions for more fun themed hats to go with it (especially from my 5yr old & husband) and last Halloween my kids were all coordinated in their costumes:

After much tinkering I came up with this one, The Little Vader, so the small boys could get in on the action too. Technically my model is not a boy, but she's got the required level of fierce to carry the hat off -  just look at little bossy pants commanding things here:

So to celebrate all the little sci-fi cuties out there this Halloween season, I'm giving away TWO  sets of my most popular patterns:

The Space Princess Hairdo Hat and
Space Princess Gown & Belt!

Each winner will receive the hairdo hat and gown PDF patterns to make a complete Space Princess costume.  The patterns are both easy enough for a beginner and have full color, step-by-step photos and sizing for tiny baby up to 2yrs.  Using fleece makes them perfect for those chilly trick-or-treating nights and simple to wear over clothes.  Two lucky winners will be able to make a comfy & memorable costume in no time!

And if you're not super into sci-fi looks, just remove the belt and the gown is ideal for little angels, snow bunnies or use as a cuddly winter dress.

A Little Princess Hairdo Hat

My kids love playing pretend, so I've been thinking about fairy tale crafts & costumes for a while now.  It's been a lot of fun coming up with ideas they want to use in their play adventures & today's creation is no exception.  Now that I've got a little princess around the house I thought it would be fun to create her a little themed hairdo hat a bit different than the other styles I've designed - more fanciful & slightly dressy I suppose.  And from that goal The Little Princess Hairdo Hat was born!

I made a princess cone-shaped hat out of bright pink fleece and added some pretty scalloped trim and airy tulle detailing in a softer shade of pink.  I also created a built-in braid with the face framing "hair" like all the cartoon princesses have.  And since all her other hats have been brunette, we went with blonde for a change.

I love watching her run around in it.  It's like having a little storybook character hanging around the house.  And she totally digs it too.

At the rate her hair is growing in (incredibly slowly), I foresee more even hairdo hat ideas in our future.  I also added this style to my shop, The Green Hedgehog, in case anyone else wanted to give their loved one the royal treatment too:)

A Little Reindeer

In keeping with the festive theme this week, here's a look at one of my winter season fleece hat creations, the Little Reindeer.  With some plush antlers & velvety soft ears this hat turns baby into a festive friend.

I love hearing people commenting on it & pointing it out when she's wearing it when we're out.  It's definitely an attention grabber.  As you can see, she's pretty fond of it too.

And it made our holiday cards 100% festive & fun this year:

I even made a trio of them for my sister to give to someone with 3 little girls this year & added a little holiday flower to each so they could tell them apart.  Of course I forgot to photograph those.  But, the Little Reindeer hat is also available in my shop, The Green Hedgehog, so all the other little dears out there can be reindeer too;)

Time For A Little Elf

The holidays are coming whether we're ready or not.  So how about a little elf magic to help out?  Elves are good at getting stuff done - just ask Santa.  Or old-timey shoemakers.  Here's my Little Elf Hat & Bootie Set.  All made of cuddly red fleece to magically transform a little person into the perfect little elf:

And yes, the hat is complete with built-in pointed ears.  I made them detachable, so as quick as a snap (well, literally because of a snap), the ears can be removed.  Maybe baby also has a gig playing Santa at the mall on the weekend and needs a quick transformation on the hat.  Maybe not everyone digs the ears.  I'm not here to judge.

And of course the booties have to be elf-style too.  Complete with pom-poms on the curly toes.  But to keep mommy sane (and not having to search all over for kicked off shoes), the booties have a elastic ankle and hidden satin ribbon tie under the cuff, so they'll stay on busy little feet.

And all pieces have a delicate zig-zag finished edge to add a little extra whimsy.  Toss in a festive outfit and this little imp is ready to rock this Christmas (or whenever a elf/gnome/fairy look is desired).

The Little Elf Hat & Bootie Set is also available in my shop, The Green Hedgehog and with the option of larger sizes and other skin tones for the ears, since sweet little elves come in all sizes & shades of the rainbow:)

Introducing: The Little Gift Baby Hat

With the winter holiday season now beginning the second Halloween is over, I knew I had to get a jump start on some fun, seasonal hat ideas asap.   And so my Little Gift Baby Hat was born.  Since everyone says a baby is a little gift, now they can show it off in no uncertain terms this holiday season.

I made the hat have a boxy shape like a real gift would be, have it "wrapped" in fleece "ribbon" and topped it off with a nice, thick double bow.  Ta-da!

Of course it's got to have a gift tag that describes the wearer perfectly:

Getting festive and having fun at the same time has never been easier!  And as you can see, the recipient likes the connotation it gives her:

I've made this available as sized-to-order hat in my Etsy shop, The Green Hedgehog, as well, so more babies can get in on the "I'm A Little Gift" hat action!

Yeah, We're Halloween Star Wars Nerds.

My Space Princess Hairdo Hat started it all.  Just a crazy creation I made for fun that got an amazing reaction after I showed it in a post over the summer.  I was stunned people wanted to buy one.  So I started making them for my Etsy shop and was kicked into hyperdrive when it was featured on Etsy's Daily Find.  I had to take it a step further for my own kids & make a full-on trio of Star Wars costumes for Halloween.  With the number of Halloween hats I'd been furiously sewing, a few costumes seemed like a walk in the park.  Here they are in all their glory for your viewing pleasure.

I was too cheap & pressed for time to search around for something to look like Leia's gown, so I made my own.

I found it easier to make my own pattern and create a fleece gown with detachable belt.  Yeah, I know that sounds crazy, but seriously, it was less work than spending hours surfing online or out in the stores.  It snaps up the back so it's really simple to get on & off too.

As you can see, she totally digs it:

Of course, my guys couldn't be left out, so I made my signature Little Alien hat for Ethan as well as the rest of the ensemble.

A customer had asked me to make hands & feet for her a while back, so after creating those there was no reason not to go full force on his costume too.  Did you catch the "force" reference there?  Yeah, I'm a total nerd.

I modified a bathrobe pattern with bell sleeves and more length and snagged a light up sword (2 for $1 at Target).  Score!  My middle child is obsessed with the lights and sounds of light sabres & what he calls "blast-overs" (aka blasters), so he's our Han Solo.

Cheap white shirt & blue sweats paired with a fleece vest and snap-on belt I made and he's ready for action.

We've already worn them 3 times for various Halloween parties and gotten a great reaction, so we're ready to rock it out on the big night.  This is Serena's first Halloween costume & chance to trick or treat so I think it's going to be a blast (or blast-over as my little guy would say).

Have a great Halloween everybody!!
