A New FREE Pattern: The Off To Market Bag

Today I'm happy to share my latest bag design: the Off To Market Bag.  A chic bag that is simple to make with all the details of a high end boutique item; fully lined, stylish wooden handles and a magnetic closure.  Big enough for shopping, but also chic enough to use as a purse.
I used two lovely prints by Joel Dewberry to make it - Aviary 2 Sparrows and Aviary 2 Damask (both in Lilac).  The outer print is a PUL backed cotton, which means it's also waterproof.  I'd used both laminated cotton and polyester PUL before, but this fabric was new to me.  I got mine over at Just Laminates, my favorite shop for specialty fabric.  It has the soft finish of regular cotton, but with a little more body thanks to the thin polyurethane layer on the back.  It was a dream to sew with and worked great with the Ultra Firm stabilizer to give the bag a sturdy, yet curved shape.
Using wooden handles & magnetic clasps is really easy and it gives such a nice finish to a handmade bag:

I've been using mine non-stop.  It's nice to be able to toss my all stuff right in and open it wide to see everything easily:

  17. What a beautiful bag! I have just written my first pattern for a handbag that also works as a walker bag. Do you have any advice on finding people to test the pattern for you? Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. Thanks Nicole. Personally I haven't done tester calls, but I know a lot of people will announce a need for pattern testers on their blog or Facebook page. Good luck!

  19. Love this pattern! Am wondering how to print the pattern in tru-grid layout or do you simply follow the measurements given & cut accordingly?

    1. Thank you! To be honest, I did not have the Tru-Grid portion in the pattern I created for them - it looks like that was a later addition from Pellon. My guess would be to print my original template pieces and then lay them over the Tru-Grid or just skip that item all together and just use my dimensions on any type of paper and add on the curved template for the main sides.
