Put A Little Spring In Your Step Stool

I has this $4.99 wood step stool from Ikea just collecting dust in our sunroom, when I realized I could make it fab to use in my Craft Room with a little liquid starch + fabric.  Here's how I made it customized with barely any effort:

- I flipped it upside down and traced the top step onto a piece of paper for my pattern & used a ruler to measure out the edges of the lower step.

- Cut out the pieces from some scraps of a fave dot fabric and starched 'em on.

Yeah, that's it.  It literally took minutes and no painting, priming or gluing to give it some flair.  Even better, if I want to switch things up with a new look, there's no big production with doing that either.  Just peel off the fabric & trace the shapes onto a new fabric.  I can even wash & toss the dot fabric back in my scrap bin so nothing gets wasted.

Now this cute little guy has a new lease on life & is seeing daily use in my Craft Room:

Thanks to my crafting BFF: Liquid Starch!

Sharing this with my fave link parties too so check them out here!

  1. I have this same stool and since it isn't stained it always looks dirty. This totally solves the problem. Great idea!

  4. You've read my mind--this is exactly what I was thinking of doing with mine, but wasn't sure if it would turn out. You've inspired me to finally take the plunge with it. Hope it's okay if I link up to your post! http://shadowcase.blogspot.com

  5. That looks great!! I love that you can easily take it off and wash it and put it back on, or put on new fabric! By the way, I think that's the cleanest craft room I've ever seen!

  9. That's such a perfect idea!! :D I was looking at a book today with a pattern for a stepstool, but I was reluctant to add it to my arsenal til I could figure out how to add some punch to it!! I think this might be it! :D

  10. I had NO idea you could do anything but make a pinata with starch. These creations are amazing! Keep 'em coming. I'm off to buy the biggest jug of liquid starch I can find!

  12. Oh my goodness! I have been re-looking for this post for 3 days, can you beleive it? I could not remember how you adhered your fabric, but I COULD remember that you are able to change the fabric whenever you like (or wash and put back.) So, I am thinking about adhereing fabric to the risers on our steps going upstairs -only 7 steps. They are all wood and kind of boring, but I do not want to paint them white because I am sure I would be getting the paint can out for touch ups again in about 1 week!
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for posting!!!!

  13. O.K., I feel like I a "stalking" this post! I just used your idea to add to another project. I still want to cover this set of risers with a different fabric, but it would not work for the moment. I am probably going to cover the risers in our second set of steps. Maybe I'll just send an email for that one!! I posted a link to here for proper credit. :) Here's my post: http://shanarunacreativespace.blogspot.com/2010/10/halloween-pumpkins-stairs-and-mice.html
