Mixing & Matching Patterns

I love little matching sets, but since it's rare for me to find a single store pattern that has exactly what I want, I usually cobble together my own, like this one I made a few weeks ago:

The top is a fabulous free pattern called the Gymboree Top courtesy of Kristen over at Fiddlehead.  A few of you longtime readers may remember I made a few of these a year ago just before my daughter was born, so she could wear them as dresses:

They STILL fit!! And making them is fast & easy, so it's a definite favorite.

For the bottoms, I used a vintage diaper cover pattern from the 80s (man, does saying that make me feel about 100 yrs old!).  It was Simplicity 7109 circa 1985 (later patterns with this # are for something completely different). My mom gave me a ginormous box full of old patterns she had & this was one of them.  There were loads of good ones, so I won't be short of projects for a while.  I loved how they snap up both sides:

It's fully lined with the same fabric, was pretty easy to make and fits great over a cloth diaper too:

Fun little ensemble with free patterns - can't go wrong!

Sharing this with my fave link parties too so check them out here!

  1. those two outfits are so adorable! I hope to one day be able to sew something like that up!
And that little one is so precious!

  2. You are right, the snap feature is delightful - and you are right - saying vintage about the eighties is sooooooooooooo wrong but then again growing up my parent's music was what was plaid on oldies stations and as hold music and in stores - now it is my music. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!

  3. Cute! Love the fabric choice! I need to start making some dresses for my little girl!

  4. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, that's just precious!

  5. Woman, you have more patience than I do. I can't sew itsy, bitsy things like that. Too uncomfortable.

Great job, anyway, your daughter looks super cute in it.

  6. Very cute! Visiting from Party Thursday.

  7. What a cute outfit. Your daughter is so cute. (Good for you for using cloth diapers, I did, too, and no one ever knew how to change them :P)

  8. Those are so adorable! My mother-in-law has been saying I should look through her patterns from the 70's and 80's and now I'm so much more motivated to do so!

  9. Cute outfits, like the colour and pattern. and Mix and Match is always my favourite thing.. love yours very much, After seeing that I feel to sew some for someone, .. may be for my little niece,,, thanks for sharing.
